From Book...
Kurukshetra, a masterpiece of ideas and thoughts, is an epic-in-miniature on war and peace. It reveals the heroic India to the world, an India hitherto in oblivion. The contents of the poem have remained restricted to the Hindi-knowing readers till date. In rendering the mini-epic in rhymed English verse, The Battle Royale, the authors are acting as facilitators, or rather as bridge-builders. The endeavour to adapt the Hindi classic in English stems from the need to apprise the English-knowing literati about the ideas treasured in this modern epic of Dinkar who is held in the highest esteem by Hindi readers for the depth of his vision, imagination and thought. This rendering has been achieved without any dilution of thought or meaning inherent in the original Hindi poem in any manner.
Through this adaptation India salutes Dinkar and gives signal honour to the sublimity of thoughts contained in the modern classic Kurukshetra. The authors of The Battle Royale have persevered to recreate the effect of Kurukshetra’s thoughts, in a language with a variety of rhymes and rhythms that make a direct appeal to the hearts and minds of English readers, as Dinkar was a poet passionately in love with language, a master of the art and craft of expression.
